    Christie: Transitioning from Film to Fulldome Experience

    Exploring the INTUITIVE Planetarium at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center

    “Huntsville deserves a world-class planetarium,” declared Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC), during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new INTUITIVE® Planetarium on February 28, 2019. With this state-of-the-art facility, they have certainly achieved that aspiration.

    A Leap into Digital Technology

    The INTUITIVE Planetarium is named after its benefactor, Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation, and marks a transformative shift for USSRC. Moving from traditional analog systems to cutting-edge digital technology, this planetarium boasts a 248-seat capacity and employs fulldome projection.

    Doug Boyer, senior account manager at Christie, noted the significance of the custom technology package, integrating five Christie D4K40-RGB laser projectors provided by Evans & Sutherland (E&S). This configuration represents a pioneering approach to RGB laser projection in planetariums, setting a new standard for both education and entertainment.

    “Everyone should see this installation,” Boyer recommended, emphasizing the projectors’ capabilities to deliver a vibrant color palette and remarkable brightness. The RGB technology exceeds traditional projection options, enabling audiences to explore the cosmos with unprecedented clarity.

    A Stellar Display

    Journalist Paul Gattis captured the essence of the experience, stating, “The images on the screen are sharper than a knife.” Visitors can immerse themselves in a stunning tapestry of the universe, where the dark sky of the Milky Way brilliantly contrasts with colorful Earth displays.

    Evans & Sutherland quickly recognized the potential of the Christie D4K40-RGB projectors. E&S President and COO Kirk Johnson mentioned the successful integration of their ESX 8K systems with Digistar 6 software along with a Spitz Nanoseam™ screen, filling the planetarium’s expansive 67-foot diameter dome. “The image looks stunning,” he stated, highlighting the visual excellence achievable through this innovative system.

    From Film to Digital: A Necessary Evolution

    The transition to digital projection is crucial, especially considering the obsolescence of traditional giant-screen film systems. David Hitt, in his report for Huntsville.org, aptly noted the historic significance of the center’s previous Spacedome IMAX theater, which was state-of-the-art over three decades ago. The INTUITIVE Planetarium is equipped to honor that legacy while propelling it into the future.

    Johnson elaborated on the evolution, explaining the significance of upgrading from a 1570 film projector to a top-tier 8K digital system. Not only does this advancement bring high-quality visual content, but it also enhances audience comfort with newly installed premium seating in the center of the theater.

    The Next Generation of Projector Technology

    Christie’s D4K40-RGB projectors represent a significant leap in projection technology designed for large venues. They feature crucial specifications such as 40,000 lumens of brightness and a striking contrast ratio of 5000:1. With a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours at 60% brightness, these projectors also support 95% of the Rec. 2020 color space, offering a rich and expansive color palette crucial for immersive experiences.

    David Weigel, the Planetarium Director, emphasized the transformative impact of these projectors: “You can pick out every single star in a star cluster,” he remarked. The clarity and vibrancy of the displays are so pronounced that traditional cameras struggle to capture their true essence.

    Addressing Technical Challenges

    Evans & Sutherland has addressed historical challenges in dome projection, such as cross-reflection issues often associated with high brightness. Johnson shared insights from extensive testing that enable planetariums to utilize increased lumen outputs without compromising visual quality. “Thanks to new technology, we can set aside some of the old specs,” he explained.

    This advancement allows for a more visually engaging experience, resulting in minimal brightness drop-off toward the edges of the dome, making every seat in the theater a premium one.

    Interactive and Educational Experiences

    Weigel’s programming approach emphasizes real-time engagement with audiences. “Live shows connect with audiences in a way other programming can’t,” he stated, underscoring the importance of interactive content in fostering excitement about astronomy.

    Utilizing Digistar 6, Weigel and his team develop their own vivid live presentations alongside pre-rendered shows, ensuring a continuous stream of fresh content. They have created a blend of innovative programming that keeps visitors engaged and informs them about the latest in space exploration.
